'Needs of the Many' was produced as part of a series of seven unrelated short films across 2015. It received an overwhelmingly positive reaction within the Star Trek fan film community, with its powerful story and simple production design.

This story is set at an unspecified time after the fourth and final season of STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, potentially in late 2155/early 2156.
The name 'Elisabeth' is actress Harriet Fettis' middle name.
Though unmentioned on screen, the dedication plaque lists the ship as 'Endeavour' named after the fifth and final NASA Space Shuttle. The plaque also denotes the ship as 'NX-05' when technically it should be NX-06 (after Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis) and the captain as Andrew David, an in-joke after NEEDS OF THE MANY's Effects Designer.
The Starfleet uniforms feature epaulettes on the shoulders and two sets of assignment patches, one Starfleet and one ship specific - although in this case, it is that of Jupiter Station as seen in STAR TREK: VOYAGER.
Elisabeth is trapped on B Deck, Section 47 - an in-joke about the frequent occurrence of the number '47' in the STAR TREK television spin-off series.
The ship has been hit by a mine cloaked in subspace, similar to that which the 'NX-01 Enterprise' encountered in the Romulan minefield, in the STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE episode 'Mindfield'.
The title of the story is, of course, a reference to a quote from Spock in STAR TREK: THE WRATH OF KHAN - "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few".
